Overview

Erectile dysfunction, often known as impotence, is the inability to obtain or maintain an erection during sexual activity. The most common sex problem that men report to their doctor is erectile dysfunction (ED). ED can lead to anxiety, relationship troubles, and a lack of self-confidence.

It’s natural to experience problems now and then, but if they persist, you should consult your doctor. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by an underlying health condition, and addressing the underlying condition can help to remedy the ED. Erectile dysfunction treatment tries to improve a man’s quality of life by restoring erectile function.

Erectile dysfunction is a condition that our urologists at Urology Clinics of North Texas are well-versed in addressing. We will treat your problem with discretion to make the process as comfortable as possible, even though ED can be embarrassing to discuss.

Erectile Dysfunction

Causes

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by stress, health issues, or a combination of the two. As men become older, erectile dysfunction becomes more common. There are several known risk factors for ED, including:

  • Age (Over 50 years of age)
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking
  • Excessive drug or alcohol use
  • Obesity
  • Sleep disorders

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by psychological disorders that interfere with sexual sensations. Impotence can be triggered by depression, anxiety, stress, and relationship issues. Erectile dysfunction difficulties may be alleviated by treating certain disorders.

Diagnosis

A physical exam and medical history are usually enough for a doctor to diagnose erectile dysfunction. Your urologist may ask you the following questions:

  • What symptoms are you experiencing?
  • How long have you experienced these symptoms?
  • Have you had any recent life changes or major stressors?
  • What medications are you taking?

Further testing may be required if your ED is caused by a persistent health issue or an underlying disease. Erectile dysfunction can be diagnosed through blood tests and urine analyses. An ultrasound may be used to check blood flow on occasion.

Treatment

After determining the reason of your erectile dysfunction, your doctor will address any underlying illnesses that may be exacerbating it. Depending on the origin and degree of your erectile dysfunction, you may have a variety of therapy choices. Your doctor will meet with you to discuss the best treatment options for your specific condition.

The most common oral medications to treat erectile dysfunction are:

  • Sildenafil (Viagra)
  • Tadalafil (Cialis)
  • Vardenafil (Staxyn)

All of these drugs act by relaxing the muscles of the penis, enabling more blood to flow through it. The medicine does not create an erection right away, therefore stimulation is still required.

Injections, suppositories, testosterone replacement, and pumps or implants are some of the other therapy possibilities. Exercise and other lifestyle modifications may also help to improve erectile function, and your doctor may recommend them. Always come to your visit prepared by writing down any symptoms, providing a list of all drugs, and disclosing any recent life changes.
